Toolbox - communicating
effectively

ABCs
Behaviour Minder
Everyone knows that
the ability of people to communicate effectively is what makes
or breaks an organisation. Yet common practice often falls
short of common sense. The Temenos on-line Behaviour
Minder provides some unique features regarding an
individual’s effectiveness as a communicator:
- Feedback is one-on-one, not anonymous
- The feedback is relationship-specific, not generic averages
- Up to three different reports focus on observable behaviours
- The feedback is positive, forward-focused and practical.
How it works:
- A respondent rates the frequency with which 48 behaviours
are used in typical interactions
- The respondent also indicates behaviours they would like
you to change
- As the feedback recipient, you also rate the frequency
with which you think you use the behaviours in this relationship;
useful in identifying potential ‘blind spots’
- 15 – 20 minutes to complete
- Best reviewed with a skilled mentor.

Engagement
Style Questionnaire
Interactions with
others are rarely the subject of scrutiny. This questionnaire
provides feedback on the impact and associated feelings of
an individual’s behaviour on one other person. Building on
the concept of ‘the power of one’ and the significance of
a commitment to Win-Win outcomes in the relationship, the
insights can result in immediate benefits for the individual’s
involved. Like the Behaviour
Minder, the feedback is not anonymous.
How it works:
- Three part questionnaire highlighting:
- Feelings a respondent has about a a relationship
- Perceptions about commitment to Win-Win outcomes
- Positive changes to specific behaviours that could be
beneficial
- 20 – 25 minutes to complete (electronically)
- A facilitated review and action planning session is usually
followed by a meeting with the respondent to reinforce commitments.
Alex Sutherland
designed this ‘tool’ and uses it in mentoring where a leader’s
engagement style is the prime focus.
